The Brief: To create a map of the Logan Square area of Chicago.
Role: Graphic designer and illustrator responsible for concept, design, and implementation of all lettering and illustration.
Tools Used: Paper, pencil and ink, scanner, Adobe Creative Suite.
To create a map of my own neighborhood in Chicago was a great project—however, I found it even more difficult than normal because I wanted to cram too much into it! In the end, I focused on the main attractions someone would need in the area and plan to do another more restaurant and bar focused map later on. The larger white type are the main landmarks, where the smaller script is the road names. I marked the train stations and added some icons where there are good restaurants. This map was drawn entirely by hand on paper using ink, then was scanned into the computer, vectorized and colorized on the computer, and finally composed and finalized in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
